Nēdaļas Diena = Day of the Week
My father is Latvian. He taught me and my three other siblings a few sayings like good night, good morning, but nothing beyond that. I have always asked him to try and teach me a few things so that he could have the opportunity to converse in Latvian and not loose any recollection of it that he still has. Well that was like talking to a wall. So, my Mom knows that both me and my sister Lija would both put forth the effort to learn Latvian to be capable of conversing with him in his native tongue. Not only that we have tons of letters and old books, notes, etc from his mother (Erika Eiduks) that we want translated. First instinct is to get my Dad to translate but as many people know, reading and writing versus speaking a language are two entirely different things. He was never taught grammatical Latvian.
The goal is for my sister and I to slowly learn a few things and to start conversing with my Dad on a minimal basis. So far so good, this is week one and Lija and I are going to learn the Days of the Week. We are using this software called BYKI (Before You Know It). We downloaded it for free and it is available for both Mac Users (like me) and Windows Users (like Lija), and of course you can upgrade for a fee but for some initial learning I think this will serve its purpose.
Next on the list for me: German and French.
Today is pirmdiene. (Monday)
